The Pros and Cons of Utility Suites: What You Need to Know Before Making a Decision

Introduce the topic of utility suites and what they are used for

Utility suites are software packages which usually come with one application only, unlike a suite. Utility suites are generally used for things like video conversion or media streaming. These applications are in a program, so you don’t have to deal with installing or uninstalling separate media conversion tools. Utility suites are also known as suites with only one application, because they often come with more than one program and these single purpose programs are packed into a single application.
The name “suite” actually comes from software suites like Microsoft Office. This is because they provide multiple programs in one package and usually only one of the programs is the major program that most people use, such as Word in Microsoft Office.
The term utility suite was officially coined by Stardock, who created the first Windows utility suite with a single-focus application called Fences.
Applications like Handbrake, VLC, and Plex are popular utility suites. They can be used for media streaming from a computer, and video conversion.

Talk about how a single program can be used to control all the utilities in a home

A single program can control all the utilities in a home, by being used as a central hub for other utilities. For example: the computer can be used to stream content to smart TV’s and media players. This can be done through applications such as Plex, or Kodi, which are both video streaming utility suites. Another example of this is general usage of the computer as a central hub would be the usage of a PC rather than a set-top box, in order to play video or music. This is made possible through the use of multimedia players such as VLC or Spotify. One important thing to note is that this function, as well as any of these other examples, can be packaged into the utility suite itself. Therefore, the price for such packages would be much less than purchasing multiple different utilities individually.
Additionally, in order to buy a set-top box with a computer, one must already have a computer and an internet connection. However, in order to buy a media player by itself, one must first buy the media player, while also buying a television.

Discuss some of the benefits of using a utility suite

The best benefit of using a utility suite is the amount of money saved. It is cheaper to get one single application that encompasses all the abilities of multiple other applications, than it is to buy them separately. Another benefit of using utility suites is that they are user friendly and generally easier to use. Because they have one focus, they are easy to master, it is easier to remember the many functions of one application than it is to remember the functions of multiple applications. They are also extremely helpful when you want to use different applications at the same time. By having one application instead of multiple applications, you can benefit from all that each application has to offer. If you have a computer with two or more hard drives or CD-ROMs, then a utility suite is your best investment because it will let you use each of the hard drives or CD-ROMs as independent storage units. This makes it easy to copy data between the different hard drives and cdroms without having to worry about formatting.
Another good benefit of utility suites is that they generally keep all the upgraded versions on file, so you do not have to repeatedly download updates for each and every application in the suite. This means less work for the user and faster use of the applications.

Offer tips on how to choose the right utility suite for your needs

When choosing a utility suite, it is best to narrow down the choices to a few of the most useful functions. A good example of this would be the usage of a video conversion utility suite for converting video files from DVD’s into formats that can play on smart devices such as phone or tablets. The easiest way to choose which utility suite you will use is to just try them out for free and see which one you like best.
Here at Finders, we have five utility suites that we use for our tasks and for our customers, including a video conversion utility suite, and although it’s not in the same category as others, there are several other free alternatives which you could use as well.
Batch file conversion software: WinZip (free) and WinRAR (free). These two software suites allow you to easily change files from one format to another. However, you can use any of the above programs to do this.
Security suite: AVG (free) is a good choice for this.
Utility suite: Paragon NTFS for Mac (free) is a good example of this, as it allows you to read and write to file systems that are normally not readable from Mac OS X.
Video conversion: Handbrake (free) is a good video conversion utility suite.
Other free options include:
Open Office, which is a good alternative to Microsoft Office. You can make presentations and documents in Open Office, edit text, create spreadsheets and more without the need for Microsoft Office.
Free YouTube Downloader to download videos from YouTube.com with ease.
