Vector Images: What They Are, How to Create Them, and What Types of Projects You Can Use Them For
What are vector images and what are they used for
Vector images are a type of digital image that starts with geometric shapes and fills them in with colors. They are used to create graphics for websites, logos, and other graphics. Vector images can be scaled without losing quality or pixelation. [1] Vector images are sometimes referred to as raster images, which are images made from pixels. [2]
Vector images are sometimes called bitmapped images because every pixel has a unique value for color and may be either black, white, or any shades of gray. [3] Each pixel has the same values in only three possible directions: horizontal (x-axis), vertical (y-axis) and diagonal (angle). The amount of these three values that each pixel has is called its vector. Because of this, vector images are sometimes called polygon images. [4]
How do you create a vector image using an image editor
There are different methods to create vector images, such as painting in a digital image by hand or using more advanced software like Illustrator, Photoshop, Inkscape. For creating vector images with Photoshop, you can import a picture into your computer or use an image editor like Gimp. Photoshop has many tools for vector editing such as Pencil, Line, Path, Shape and Fill. [2]
We start by importing a picture into Photoshop, or choosing an image that has already been saved on your computer. The advantage of this method is that you can edit the photo as a raster image and not have to create the vector image from scratch. Then we use the Pencil Tool [1] to trace over all the lines in the photo. This will create a vector image because we are creating points and connecting them with straight lines.
